What Do You Want To Be When You Grow Up?

Lesson Subject: Visual Art/Careers
Grade Level: K- Third
Planned Lesson Duration: 50 minutes

Lesson Topic:
An art lesson that will stimulate the students to think about what they want to be in the future. With crayons, the students will display their artistic ability by drawing a self-portrait of what they are going to be when they grow up.

Rationale:
It is important for the students to think about what they want to be when they grow up. It gives them a goal to focus on as they travel through their education journey. In addition, the students need to understand and appreciate the concept of time and change. Through this activity they are given that opportunity, as they think to themselves, share with a partner, and with the whole class.

OBJECTIVES:
Creative Expression: Each student will create a self-portrait using colored crayons of what he/she wants to be in the future. He/she will think of his/her profession on his/her own.

Aesthetic Valuing: After the activity the students will share with the rest of the class what they want to be when they grow up by sharing the key points in their drawing; such as line, color, and the objects depicted.

STRATEGY:
A combination of guided discovery and group think-pair-share will be used with direct instruction.

PROCEDURES:
INTRODUCTION: I will pose the following questions: “What are some occupations or jobs today? What does that particular job/occupation/ profession/career do? What type of setting or environment are they in?” After generating a wealth of responses I would then ask the students to think, to themselves, about what they want to be. After they have had enough time to think to themselves (1-2 minutes), I will ask them to share their profession that they thought of with a partner. After everyone has selected a profession, we will then start the activity.

ACTIVITY SEQUENCE:
Once the students have their profession in their mind on what they want to draw, I will pass out white 8 1/2 X 11 paper and they will have a box of crayons. On their own they will draw a self-portrait of themselves in their profession. The teacher should encourage them to, first, draw themselves. To help the students focus, have them think about: 1) the outfit they are wearing, 2) the tools they will have, 3) the position in which they see themselves doing (running, walking, standing, sitting, etc.), 4) and colors they want to use. Then the teacher will instruct them to create the environment around them.

CLOSURE:
The students will share with the class their self-portrait, what they want to be when they grow up and the environment in which they placed themselves.

EXPANSION:
After students are finished drawing their picture I will read them a book called When I Grow Up by P.K. Hallinan. This book incorporates reading, and the students will get excited because they will recognize many of the professions in the book. What they want to be will be reinforced by reading and sharing this book.

CLEAN-UP:
Approximately 5 minutes. Have the students return their crayons to their desk or cubby and place their art work along the back counter for all to see. The art work should, later, be displayed on the bulletin board. They are to be dismissed by how well they have cleaned up their area.

EVALUATION:
Each student created a self-portrait of what he/she wants to be in the future with colored crayons. The teacher will know that they have thought about themselves in the future, for they have drawn themselves in that profession. The teacher will then check for art techniques used, such as line, color, and objects depicted. After the activity the students shared with the rest of the class their drawing and what they were doing in the drawing. The evaluation occurs when the teacher witnesses the completion of the activity.

MATERIALS:
1) Each student has his/her own box of crayons
2) One piece of paper for each student ( 8 1/2 X 11 white)
3) The book, When I Grow Up, by P.K. Hallinan
